How to become a Yo-Yo champion
1 Set Goals.
The key to achievement is setting goals.
Set a large goal and then break it down to smaller objectives. For instance if you want to become a Yo-Yo World Champion you are going to need experience in competing at Yo-Yo contests. Winning a local or regional contest and then winning a national contest is probably the obvious route to take. If you win a national contest then you’re are seeded to the World Yo-Yo contest, you are guaranteed to make it to the freestyle finals and have a better chance of winning.
2 Learn.
Learn as many tricks and styles of Yo-Yo play as possible. They all compliment each other and will help you progress. A good place to start is with instructional Yo-Yo DVD Original Spin.
Videos like this will help you quickly master some of the Yo-Yo tricks that are necessary to become a Yo-Yo champion. Original Spin has been put together as an interesting and fun teaching aid ensuring you stay focused for longer. Utilise slow-motion, multiple angels and voice over to progress faster.
3 Train.
Practice set tricks or sequences. You need to be able to do them in your sleep, blind fold, with the wrong hand and in front of a crowd. 20 times in a row without mistakes. Get your heart racing (go for a run or skip) and then train your tricks. When doing the tricks face different directions, practice out doors, in low light, in blinding light, in the heat and freezing cold. The tricks should be easy for you! This will mean you are fully prepared for any conditions you might find yourself in at a contest.
4 Contest Rules.
Read and understand the rules well before the competition deadline. Anything that you don’t understand ask, just make sure it’s weeks before the competition. On the day of a contest you should not need to be asking questions about the rules of format of the competition. At your first contest enter the sports ladder. When your ready to move up to the championship divisions plan your freestyle months before a contest. Create a freestyle that is based on the judging criteria.
Always accept the judges decision, no one likes a bad looser! If you don’t win the first, second or tenth time keep at it! Anyone who has become a true Yo-Yo master has been beaten, learned from their defeat and gone onto practice harder and eventually win.
Enjoy yourself and good luck!
